I have been using SimpleHTTpServer in python to transfer files on the local network.

Here is how it is done, if you don't know already.

python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8888

This will start a server and you can access your directory at http://localhost:8888.

Now, let's do the same thing in ruby.

ruby -run -e httpd

Eureka, this will start a server at port 8080. Now if you want to run it on some other  port just pass in the option -p <port_number>.

ruby -run -e httpd -p 8888
